Is Open Access important?
Key words:
open access; information; information society; information management; knowledge resources
Abstract:
Looking into the future and thinking about building an information society, seeing threats of commercialization of knowledge and its access, we should consider the new role of libraries in the new millennium. The role will undoubtedly be connected with building different knowledge resources and creating different types of access to it. Therefore, it is important to observe the world's effort in the field in the form of the widely popular Open Access initiative, still relatively unknown in Poland. It has begun to influence the decisions of the European Parliament and governments of some countries.
Why is the initiative important, according to the author? New technologies have changed access to knowledge to such an extent that some processes must be rethought, renamed and implemented. Scientific and library communities must verify their previous views on knowledge dissemination. They should consider orienting it more towards the user, who is in the center of attention, and who has rights of access to information and education as specified in the UN Declaration on Human Rights.
Unrestricted access to knowledge is the biggest enemy of intolerance, and in the long run improves the quality of life of all people, leading to high level of civilization and economic development. Librarians can assist in the process of building unrestricted access to knowledge resources and thus find the ulterior goal to reach in the coming years.

National Union Catalog NUKAT (Narodowy Uniwersalny Katalog Centralny) and changes in libraries
Key words:
shared cataloging; bibliographic records; exchange of bibliographic information; library documents - location; document information; cataloguing standards
Abstract:
NUKAT has been operating for nearly three years now. It is built by means of shared cataloging as a source of ready-made records available for downloading to all contributing libraries.
National Union Catalog NUKAT:
- facilitated access to information on the location and accessibility of documents in the contributing libraries in Poland and consequently facilitated the interlibrary loan service;
- enabled rapid and rational cataloging due to shared cataloging method excluding the duplication of work
- allows to build consistent country-wide data system;
- requires its contributors to follow uniform and up-to-date cataloging rules, formats and standards, at the same time following the changes in the field;
- has a considerable impact on the organization of the workflow in the contributing libraries.
All projects and initiatives developed by libraries ought to be analyzed with regard to their potential interaction with NUKAT and information on the library collections it contains.

Culture-making role of a research library with the case example of Poznań University Library
Key words:
research library; library users; dissemination of culture
Abstract:
A research academic library primarily provides services to staff and undergraduates fulfilling the function of assisting the didactic process and research work carried out in the fields represented at a given university or within the research community of the town. However, it is also a public institution that has an additional task of sharing its expertise, experience and its collections with the general public. Consequently, assuming the responsibility for disseminating culture and culture-making use of the nation's heritage, a research library, and an academic library in particular, should aim at being viewed as an open and friendly place. The paper presents proposals and actual activities of Poznań University Library in the field of broadly understood forms of disseminating culture. The activity of documenting the nation's cultural legacy is targeted at a broad spectrum of active and potential users of the Library: undergraduates, research workers and University staff, as well as general public from and outside the town.

Evolution of library catalogs
Key words:
library catalogs; central catalogs; Internet
Abstract:
The aim of the paper is to show changes in the computer catalogs. The cooperation of libraries has led to the creation of central catalogs; however, their construction still encounters a lot of problems, growing with their scope: single university, local, national. Large central catalogs are created mostly by scientific libraries and used by librarians. An average reader has access to a local catalog, informing him about collections to be found near his residence. As searching for information on the Internet is becoming more and more difficult, selective catalogs of free resources are being created, e.g. within CORC project.

Engineering subject gateway ViFaTec
Key words:
Internet portal; engineers; information behaviour; information needs; information sources; resource guide
Abstract:
The basis of the Engineering Subject Gateway ViFaTec (http://www.vifatec.de) is the German National Library of Science and Technology (http://www.tib.uni-hannover.de). The idea of the gateway originates from 1998 and it went online in April 2000.The central aim of our Engineering Subject Gateway is to reduce information overload. Engineers and other people interested in technical matters should get a better use of available information sources by improving accessibility to them. The preparation of information according to the demands of engineers is a core service of ViFaTec: Specific standards, customs, and practices have to be allowed for, not only selecting relevant information resources but also indexing or presenting the content of ViFaTec.
There are different modules to use when researching in order to make this clear and easy to handle for the user: meta search engine, subject guide and the specialised search engine.
The meta search engine for technical literature offers a simultaneous search and retrieval over a set of databases. Included for the first release are: TIBORDER the online catalog of the German National Library of Science and Technology with a direct online access to full text German research reports and web based document delivery system, Current Contents services journals and conference proceedings and a few periodical index databases hosted by FIZ Technik like INSPEC or CEABA FIZ Technik is an engineering and business information centre.
Information in a clear and well-structured form is offered by the subject guide. Only special chosen collections of relevant high quality printed and electronic sources are listed, not single publications or websites like company homepages. Users can find here: periodical index databases, lists of books and journals, important reference books, software, databases with materials properties, product information and conference calendars.
Our specialized search engine allows access to the services of all German research institutes in engineering.

Temporary or permanent nature of a research library?
Key words:
civilization; science library; library function
Abstract:
The beginning of each century has always been perceived as the beginning of a new era thus spurring discussions on the future. We witness similar situation today in Poland, in the first years of the 21st century. There are debates about Poland and its role in today's united Europe and world. More or less lively discussions take place in various circles in Poland, including library circles. What are Polish research libraries aiming at? Will their role be merely to store information which will be accessed through Internet by those who need it? Is the "library organism" affected by contemporary significant changes? And, finally, what is permanent and unchangeable today in a research library? Those and similar questions are asked today by Polish librarians who work in research libraries. The author of the paper attempts to answer, from the viewpoint of a historian-archivist, what is permanent and unchangeable in the library organism.

Librarian educational status - past and present
Key words:
librarian; librarian stereotype; professional specialization; professional status; job preparation; required qualifications
Abstract:
There is some information about a librarian position going back to the ancient times. His role and functions have been changing in the following centuries depending on types of libraries. In recent years the position of a librarian has changed significantly. Unfortunately, the stereotypes of a library and of a librarian still do exist, the stereotype of a librarian being much worse than the stereotype of a library.
All definitions do not show the complexity and uniqueness of a librarian's job because they are confined to his basic tasks. The problem was investigated by Henryk Hollender, who characterized librarian's tasks unconventionally. He separated four groups which corresponded to professional specializations and defined their activities.
A library is a specific place, where not only library science graduates are employed but also people of other professions. People choose the librarian's job for various reasons and their level of satisfaction also varies. In the 19th century the librarian profession possessed high status. Now it is a profession with a future enabling people to employ their knowledge and skills.
According to experts, the librarian of the 21st century should be versatile and have specific character and personality. The librarian of the future should be aware of the necessity of developing his qualifications and skills. Working in a library can bring satisfaction and contentment.

Diploma librarians - past, present and future
Key words:
librarianship - Poland; librarians - legal status
Abstract:
In her paper the author presents the role of diploma librarians in scientific libraries from a historical perspective. She states that as early as in the between-war period scientific librarians were the elite of the profession. She then describes how their status changed after World War II and how their tasks evolved in the light of new regulations. The author proves that expectations towards them have always been very high - both at the exam and afterwards. There were periods when diploma librarians were appreciated - their working week was shorter; they had more time for research and the salaries were equivalent to their high qualifications. However, there were also times when diploma librarians went unappreciated. The author describes in detail diploma librarian exam requirements, which had changed several times in the past. She also presents different views presented in librarians' press and attempts to describe the place and role of diploma librarians in the future.

The role of academic libraries in the development of the knowledge society - 5 years of the eIFL-EBSCO project in Poland
Key words:
knowledge society; scientific information; academic libraries; consortia; EBSCO databases;
eIFL-EBSCO project; integrated access to information resources
Abstract:
In the age of globalization academic libraries face new major tasks in supporting of the lifelong learning process in the knowledge society. The market of online scientific information is one of the fastest growing sectors of the European economy. The library consortia organized in the last couple of years in Poland have contributed to the tremendous growth of electronic resources available for the users and filled the gap in scientific information sources compared with the countries in Western Europe and USA. The eIFL-EBSCO consortium organized 5 years ago has played the largest part in the increase of the number of full text journals available in Poland. The analysis of usage statistics shows that EBSCO databases are one of the major sources of scientific information in Poland. Due to relatively low cost and extensive collection of scientific journals in many subject areas these databases are owned by all types of libraries and scientific and research institutes. The databases and integrated services for e-resource acces offered by EBSCO support libraries in their activities for the development of the knowledge society.

Key words:
every-day-life philosophy; Library of the University of Łódź, organizational and performance changes; storage; loan system; numerus currens; free access to collection
Abstract:
The paper is an attempt of an a posteriori analysis- from the "every day life philosophy" point of view - of the planning and implementing processes connected with organizational and performance changes in the enlarged Library of the University of Łódź.
Last year the new five-story Library building was erected, designed for free access, which determined organizational changes in the "old" building and organizational solutions in the "new" one.
The Library will continue the "numerus currens" storage system connected with the traditional "voucher" loan system in the "old" premises and will keep ca 5% of the newest stock in the free-access area connected with RFID loan-system.
The main goal of our organizational activity nowadays is the implementation of the new organizational structure in both - "old" and "new" - premises that will work as an effective and coherent system.

The library in the culture - the culture in the library: informational-library processes in relation to the Polish national culture
Key words:
Polish culture; organizational culture; academic libraries - users
Abstract:
The paper describes the influence of Polish national culture on the informational processes, on the behavior of the information users and their informational culture. The first part of the paper presents cultural differences and their comparative analysis in terms of the isolation of the authorities, the individualism-collectivism and the level of tolerance to uncertainty. Polish national culture has been described on the basis of conducted research, which revealed a tendency to equality, strong collective orientation and unexpectedly high level of tolerance to uncertainty. The second part of the paper shows the impact of Polish culture on informational - library processes from two points of view: from the organizational culture in academic libraries and information centers, and that of the users, their behavior and informational culture. The author suggests that the following cultural factors have a positive influence on the informational-library processes of the 21st century: tendency to equality, individual orientation with some elements of collectiveness and a remarkable level of tolerance to uncertainty.
The aim of this paper is to initiate a discussion about the organizational culture in the Polish academic libraries and information services and also to start a debate regarding national culture, aptly named "collective programming of the mind" by G. Hofstede.

Value of the profession as seen by present and future librarians
Key words:
library profession; professional values
Abstract:
Both present and future librarians (students) seem to forget about the service nature of the job and begin to treat it as any other profession. It is a profession, however, that is interactive, service-oriented and educational. What is more, people choosing it accept low salaries, so they seem to be more interested in the value of the job itself than satisfying their own material needs.
The paper analyses of librarians and librarianship students to values such as the job itself, education, reliability and conscientiousness, unselfishness, helpfulness, fairness, honesty, trustfulness. Research shows generation differences in attitudes towards values and differences between people working already and those preparing for the job.

Jagiellonian National Library of the 21st century - tradition and modernity
Key words:
Jagiellonian National Library; computerization of scientific libraries; library cooperation; NUKAT; library building; library collections - protection
Abstract:
The paper presents transformations in the Jagiellonian National Library that have taken place over the last decade. A few hundred years old Library combines the function of a national library (obligatory copy) with a scientific and academic one, and is a part of the university library - information system together with institute and department libraries. The Library has had to face new, difficult challenges, brought by the electronic civilization, transformations in information and communication technologies as well as globalization processes. The most significant events in the last 10 years include the library computerization process, cooperation with the NUKAT central catalogue and opening of a new library building. The resulting changes have affected all library departments and library processes - from collection through cataloguing to lending and scientific information services. The above changes influenced both new and special library collections. Modern collection protection measures, launching of a modern security system and new conservation techniques were also important. Transformations in the Library have been accompanied by changes in the organizational structure and awareness of librarians. The transformation process, of a permanent nature, is closely related to numerous problems, described in the paper. The standing of the Jagiellonian Library in the history of Polish libraries and modern information society has been defined both by its tradition and modernity.

Library in global reality
Key words:
library; librarian; European Union; e-learning; eContent; globalization; Internet; learning/education; information
Abstract:
The article deals with the issue of globalization in the world and in a library. Did the fact of joining the European Union in May last year influence Polish libraries? Globalization involves changes in our thinking about and dealing with information. Libraries have always been a home of information. In the global village a librarian becomes an information broker and information itself a product. Libraries, especially the university ones have wide access to information in the virtual world. The on-line learning and e-learning courses have appeared in Poland, alongside with numerous EU projects, e.g. eContent.

E-journals: promotion and usage based on the example of the Jagiellonian Library and institute libraries of the Jagiellonian University
Key words:
electronic journals; scientific libraries
Abstract:
The paper presents recent changes in accessing collections and information resources based on the example of the Jagiellonian Library, particularly electronic journals as a novel form of accessing information sources.
While underlining the undisputable advantages of online journals, the arising problems are also taken into account. The advantages include the speed of the publishing process and updating, ready access to source and archival material, easy access to information from any destination at any time, multiple simultaneous usage, capabilities for enriching conventional text and graphic data with multimedia effects, internal and external interlinking hypertext capabilities and cross-referencing, free access to scholarly journals, and consortia model for online access. The organizational difficulties with providing users with online journals are also mentioned, such as the economic aspect of introducing new technology to libraries, lack of funding for the latest software and hardware, publishers' limitations on interlibrary loans, and restricted access to the full-text versions of archival material (often only abstracts and/or contents are available).
First of all, though, the vital issue of promoting the new form of information resources among library patrons is considered. The relevant experiences of Jagiellonian Library and some of branch libraries belonging to the University's library network are presented. Attention is drawn to overcoming psychological barriers of users that switch from printed to online, electronic and CD-ROM resources.
Finally, the prospects for further development of e-resources and tasks of librarians participating in the process are shown.

The relation of scientific libraries to cultural and civilization needs of a society
Key words:
scientific library; hybrid library; center of education; information and culture; Internet
Abstract:
Scientific libraries, like the others, are culture centres connected with tradition and fulfilling very important task of preservation and popularization of cultural heritage. On the other hand, however, the fast development of civilization makes the present day scientific libraries employ the information and communication technology. This enables them to participate actively in the process of globalization and creation of the information society, acting as centres of education and information.
In this way the traditional libraries are being transformed into hybrid libraries, where the hybridization processes affect: the media (printed and digital), services (traditional and networked), skills (of librarians and users) and the library environment (library premises and virtual library on the web). The hybrid model seems to be flexible enough for scientific libraries to meet information needs and expectations of their users, who are the members of a developing information society.

It also shows how to combine information about single electronic magazines with printed descriptions of the same magazines in the electronic library catalog. The author presents the method of data conversion from files supplied by providers, taking into account different formats used (HTML, XLS, TXT) and the accepted method of creating uniform, though not necessarily complete bibliographic descriptions. Initial files may be directly imported to the database in the Aleph system, and may create an HTML list similar to an alphabetic one. The Aleph system and HTML list enable connections with home catalog of printed magazines, and new search options. The result files that are not connected to the printed catalog may be also used by other libraries. Text files can be used separately by the providers, though may need to be adapted to a given library catalog system. HTML system is created for a whole set of magazines, as it is much easier to delete unnecessary files than add single ones.

Key words:
art library; cultural centres; cultural heritage; modern activities; tradition; special collection - loan system
Abstract:
The Main Library of the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków is the largest and oldest art school library in Poland. Its history goes back to the first half of the 19th century. It combines the tradition of academic, museum and public library. The heritage of the past materialized in large and valuable collections and historical interiors of former Technical Industrial Museum established by dr Adrian Baraniecki is combined with the duties of a contemporary university library, financed by the Ministry of Culture. How does our team of librarians cope with that difficult but inspiring task every day? What sort of questions do they ask themselves? Where do they look for answers?
Do they find them? And what are the consequences for the wide Cracow artistic society visiting our beautiful building at Smoleńsk street ? For some time now in the reading room with a view of the Wawel Castle one can also see the outer world through another kind of windows. As a result of these changes, new questions arise. What kind of library do the artists need? What does the art library mean? We will try to find answers to these and many other questions in our article.
